Outdoor Activities to Enjoy in Cebu

Cebu is an island paradise. You would be hard pressed to find another island that not only offers tropical bliss, a warmhearted population, and the best food around. This island utopia is located in central Philippines, at the heart of the archipelago.

This makes the city the second largest economy in the Philippines and is also the most visited tourist spot in the country.

When visiting the Island, it would be wrong (and I cannot emphasize this enough), to not explore the outdoor wonders of the island. Although Cebu is now evolving into a more industrialized metropolis, very evident in the rising number of high rise structures in the city; the city still retains its natural wonders and lush forestry.

Cebu island has got pretty much everything an avid outdoorsman would want. Mountains, beaches, rivers, waterfalls, pretty much whatever outdoor activity you would want, it has got (skydiving? Yep, you can too!).

In this article, we list down some of the most attractive outdoor activities you shouldn’t miss on your next visit to Cebu. From the experienced outdoorsman to the newbie explorer, these activities are sure to give you lasting memories.

Where would you want to start?

From the air, all the way to land and sea, the region has all the recreational activities you could ever want. Whether you’re a beach bum or a mountaineer, you can find just the perfect adventure in Cebu.

  1. Canyoneering
  2. Canyoneering is essentially traversing across canyons in the natural and flourishing forests. You would be trekking alongside a river and on hiking trails, usually Kanlaob River in Alegria, towards Kawasan Falls.

The best bit? You get to leap into natural pools and hidden waterfalls. For others, this might be a bit intimidating as these natural bodies have free flowing fresh water. The trick is to jump when you’re most scared. Trust me on this, it’s pure bliss.

  3. Skydiving
  4. When I said you can have an adventure in the air, I meant it. Skydiving is a sport for the daredevils and is definitely not for the faint of heart. Skydiving in Cebu is located in Bantayan island where you can literally see the entirety of the island as you are free-falling from the sky.

  5. Mountaineering
  6. The highest peak in Cebu, Osmeña Peak is known as a haven for anyone and everyone who loves nature and breath-taking views. This stunning mountainside has a great view of jagged cliffs and a faraway ocean.

Osmeña Peak has a rugged rock formation and cool weather, so aside from being perfect for planting vegetables, Osmeña Peak is also a great way to spend the day outdoors if you’re down for a hike – don’t worry, the hike isn’t that hard, as it’s only a 700-meter climb and is reachable using vehicles in 20 minutes. When you reach the top, you can eat, take photos, and just take in the majestic view.

  7. Scuba Diving
  8. Cebu is known around the world for it’s stunning dive sites and thriving marine life. Diving in Cebu is a must try for ocean enthusiasts. Some of the well known dive spots in Cebu can be found in Moalboal, Malapascua Island and Mactan Island.

If you don’t have the proper training in scuba diving though, Cebu still caters to your ocean cravings. Major resorts in Cebu also offer helmet diving. Helmet diving is you walking on the surface of the sea floor while wearing a giant helmet that lets you breathe underwater. This is a more stress free kind of diving for the untrained scuba diver, albeit, you will be limited to how far your air hose lets you.

  9. Cycling
  10. Cebu is a bicycle friendly province. In fact, cycling is becoming more and more popular as a hobby and as a form of daily transportation around Cebu City. Avid cyclists can bike their way across the island in long rides while seeing the beautiful sites around the island.

As a cyclist myself, I can tell you that there are places that even the most powerful car cannot take you to, but a bike can. Seize the opportunity to see more of Cebu while pedalling on a saddle. There are a lot of cyclists along the way as well, don’t shy away from interacting with them.

Just a few Travel Tips

Now a travel itinerary, accommodation plans, and transportation options are all the necessary things you’re going to have to prepare before landing in paradise. But do you really know what are the essentials when exploring the island of Cebu? When I say essentials, I mean the items that you will need to have in your travel purse all the time. They may be little things but they will definitely make your exploration stress free.

  • Umbrella
  • It’s a tropical island with sunshine most of the time, but there are always unexpected showers. An umbrella will help keep you dry and can also serve as added protection from the sun

  • Power Banks or Portable Chargers
  • Some of the tourist destinations will be a bit of a drive away, and might even take hours. Make sure to bring a portable charger with you, that way you can make sure your devices are charged all around. You wouldn’t want to run out of juice when that perfect capture comes around.

  • Cash
  • Although Cebu province isn’t necessarily lagging behind when it comes to industrial development, cashless transactions can only be found in very well established businesses.

  • Swimwear
  • Come on, this is an absolute given, right? It’s quite literally impossible to say you’ve explored Cebu without taking a dip in its blue waters. Bringing swimwear with you will help you enjoy these beaches and get that sun tan you’ve always wanted.

  • Sunscreen
  • Packing a good quality sunscreen will help you avoid sunburn and may even prevent other forms of skin conditions brought forth by extended periods of exposure to the sun.

  • Insect Repellant
  • As a tropical country, the Philippines is sure to have some pesky insects around. Packing an insect repellant, usually purchased in grocery stores or pharmacies around Cebu, will prevent all those annoying insects from bugging you...get it?
